Quick answer: MOQs exist because every production run carries fixed costs, so they vary by format and by manufacturer, and packaging suppliers set their own minimums too. Your cost is driven mainly by active ingredients and dose, format, packaging, testing, compliance and freight. A private label product on an existing formula often takes four to six months from brief to shelf; a custom formula takes longer.

The first question most brands ask a manufacturer is "what's your MOQ?" It is the right question, but it is only a third of the answer. The minimum order quantity tells you how many units you must buy. It does not tell you what those units cost once packaging, testing and freight are added, or how long it will take before they are sitting in your warehouse.

This guide covers all three: MOQs, costs and lead times, with a simple way to budget your first run. It is written from our experience making private label, white label and custom pet supplements in India for brands, importers and distributors.

Why Brands Manufacture Pet Supplements in India

Three things draw pet brands to Indian manufacturers. Many of the botanicals behind today's pet wellness products, such as Boswellia, turmeric and ashwagandha, are grown and processed in India, which shortens the supply chain. Manufacturing costs are generally competitive. And Ayurveda gives Indian formulators long, practical familiarity with these herbs. We explore this further in why India is a strong base for private label pet supplements.

What an MOQ Really Is, and Why It Exists

An MOQ is not an arbitrary number. It is the point at which a production run covers its own fixed costs. Those costs include:

  • Setting up and cleaning the line before and after your batch

  • The minimum batch size the equipment can run efficiently

  • Quality testing, which costs roughly the same whether the batch is small or large

  • Raw materials that are only sold in minimum pack sizes

Why MOQs differ by format

Each format runs on different equipment with a different natural batch size. Liquids are made in tanks. Soft chews are mixed, formed and dried in runs. Powders are blended. Tablets are compressed. A format that suits your product but has a higher MOQ may still be the right choice, but you should know before you commit. Our guide to pet supplement formats compares them in detail.

The MOQ nobody mentions: packaging

Printed labels, cartons and custom bottles or tubs usually have their own minimums, set by the packaging supplier rather than the manufacturer. It is common for a brand to meet the product MOQ comfortably and then discover the custom carton minimum is several times higher. Always ask for MOQs per SKU and per packaging component.

The Six Things That Drive Your Cost

  1. Active ingredients and dose. The biggest single factor. Standardised extracts cost more than raw powders, and a higher dose per serving multiplies the cost of every unit.

  2. Format. Soft chews involve more processing steps than powders or tablets. Liquids need suitable bottles and droppers and weigh more to ship.

  3. Packaging. Stock containers with a custom label are the cheapest route. Custom-moulded bottles, premium cartons and gift-style packs add cost and lead time.

  4. Testing. Batch certificates of analysis, stability testing and any third-party testing your market or retailer requires.

  5. Labelling and compliance. Artwork, translations, and a review of your label against your market's rules.

  6. Freight, duties and clearance. Sea freight is cheaper but slower than air. Duty depends on your product's customs classification and destination.

Lead Times, Stage by Stage

Every project is different, but the stages are always the same. Knowing which one is slowest lets you start it early.

  • Brief and quote: usually the quickest stage, if your brief is clear about product, market, format and volume.

  • Samples: one to three rounds for private label. Custom formulation typically takes 8 to 16 weeks to reach an approved commercial sample.

  • Packaging: often the longest single wait, especially for custom printed or moulded items. Order it as soon as artwork is approved.

  • Production and release: the batch is made, tested and released with its certificate of analysis.

  • Shipping and customs: sea freight takes weeks; air is faster and costs far more. Customs clearance depends on having the right documents ready.

How to Budget Your First Production Run

  1. Start from the shelf price your customer will accept, then work back to the landed cost per unit you can afford after retailer or marketplace margins.

  2. Ask for a quote per SKU that separates product, packaging components and testing, each with its own MOQ.

  3. Add freight, duty, clearance and delivery to your warehouse to get a true landed cost.

  4. Add label review and any market registration fees.

  5. Keep money back for your second order and a contingency, because the first run rarely goes exactly to plan.

Five Ways to Lower First-Order Risk

  • Launch one SKU in one pack size, and prove it sells before adding more.

  • Use stock containers with a custom label instead of custom packaging.

  • Start from white label or private label rather than a fully custom formula. See custom formulation vs private label for the trade-offs.

  • Ask whether a smaller pilot batch is possible for your format.

  • Choose a format with a lower MOQ for your first run if it genuinely suits the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity for private label pet supplements?

There is no single industry MOQ. It depends on the manufacturer and the format, because each production run has fixed set-up, cleaning and testing costs. Packaging suppliers also set their own minimums for printed labels, cartons and custom containers. Ask for MOQs per SKU and per packaging component when you request a quote.

A private label pet supplement on an existing formula often takes four to six months from brief to shelf, including samples, packaging, production and shipping. Custom formulation typically adds 8 to 16 weeks to reach an approved sample. Packaging lead times and late label approvals are the most common causes of delay.

Brands choose India for access to botanical ingredients such as Boswellia, turmeric and ashwagandha at source, for formulators with deep experience of Ayurvedic herbs, and for generally competitive manufacturing costs. As with any country, the quality of the individual manufacturer matters more than the location, so vet partners carefully.
